Family

Family

Our extended family.  We are descendants all the way back to Adam and Eve.   Now that is one incredibly large family.  We are all God’s children, so that makes us all brothers and sisters, which is an awesome thought.  As we walk through our day and see other people, do we think at that moment, that is my brother and that is my sister, which would point to quite an extended family?  Thinking that way, we wouldn’t ever be alone, would we?  When we meet people, do we use the expression “my brother” or “my sister” to greet them, which includes them as part of our earthly family.  If we saw all people as our brothers and sisters, we would show them enormous compassion and treat them as we do our own family.  Now that is a goal to work on for the rest of our life.

Jesus shows us the way.  In Mark 10:43-45, Jesus tells us that He came to serve and give His life for us, “. . . whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all.  For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”  He taught us the way, by showing us so many examples of caring, healing and forgiveness toward sinners, the sick, His persecutors and countless others during His public ministry.   We are called to follow His example in serving all our brothers and sisters in need without counting the cost.

How do we do that within our own families?  If forgiveness is needed to heal past hurts, then we are called to forgive those toward whom we have developed a hardness of heart.  Forgiveness is love which Jesus tells us is the greatest commandment. So where there is a lack of love in our family, we can follow Jesus’ example and show love, which would greatly please Jesus that we are willing to change.

Most likely, it won’t be easy to change on our own, but if we are willing then there is always a way.  We aren’t alone on this quest because we have the Holy Family as our great heavenly intercessors waiting to guide us through any lingering personal issues, and onto a life filled with joy, peace, love and happiness.  Let’s remember, we have to ask for their help because they won’t infringe on our free will.  It may be a lot of hard work to change, but never give up.  Any change will bring lifelong benefits to us, our family and friends. I believe most families would love to see a changed person walk into their lives.

Next, praying for our family can produce amazing results because we know that God hears every prayer, and will answer them in a way that is in their best interest.  Also, praying as a family can bring healing to old wounds over time.

Finally, just being there for the family so that they know we care and that they can count on us whenever they need us, greatly contributes to their peace of mind.
